Starting a Round of Golf on the iPhone
Upon first teeing off with Let's Golf, the user chooses between four different game modes. Instant Play mode is the quickest way to hit the links. All courses and characters are unlocked in this mode as well as in the Free Hole mode. Instant Play mode picks three random holes for the gamer to play, while Free Hole mode allows the user to choose their course.
Tournament Mode is arguably the most fun, as both the characters and different courses beyond the first need to be unlocked before being able to play them.
There are two male and two female characters to choose from, each with different ability ratings. The ratings increase as that character acquires various items during gameplay, including clothing and golf balls.
The four courses are located in Fuji, England, the USA, and Scotland. Each course sports its own feel, especially the tropical locale of Fuji and the USA's mountain course.
Realistic Golf Gameplay on the iPhone Platform
Despite its cartoon-like presentation, Let's Golf provides a decent amount of golfing realism and physics, just like the Hot Shots Golf series. Before teeing off at a hole, a 3-D flyover gives a feel for that hole's layout and hazards. The graphics are top-notch for the iPhone, easily equaling those from the PlayStation 2.
Virtual controls are overlaid on the screen to allow the golfer to switch clubs and properly aim his shot. The swing mechanism is the standard "three button press" method used by golf videogames for almost 20 years.
Spin can be applied in any of four directions while the ball is in-flight. The effect of the spin isn't as pronounced when compared to most titles in EA's Tiger Woods series. Putting is also relatively easy with a grid used to properly read the green.
Let's Golf is worthy of a download for iPhone owners looking to hit the links while on the go. Gameloft also provides a native iPad version with even better graphics.
