GT Racing Motor Academy is one of the top racing titles for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It is also quite playable on the iPad. The game is almost a clone of the classic PlayStation title, Gran Turismo, especially when considering GT Racing's deep career mode.
GT Racing Motor Academy for the iPhone and iPad Features
- Over 100 Real Cars, Including Models by Ferrari, Audi, and Mercedes
- 14 Tracks, Including Laguna Seca, as well as Road, Urban and Rally Courses
- Fully-fledged Career Mode with Licenses and Unlockable Events
- Car Upgrades and a Garage for Tweaking Them
- Local and Online Multiplayer Racing with Worldwide Leaderboards
- Race Along to Music from the iTunes Library
Considering the lack of a quality career mode in Gran Turismo PSP, GT Racing Motor Academy might be the portable racing game with the best replay value. Developed by Gameloft, this is a game sure to please racing fans with iPhones.
An iPhone Racing Game Better than Gran Turismo for the PSP?
While GT Racing also sports an arcade mode as well as multiplayer racing, its career mode is the core of the game. When first starting a career, it is obvious that the Gran Turismo series is a strong influence. In fact, GT Racing is closer to the classic PS2 Gran Turismo 3 than the PSP version of the title.
Before being able to enter any of the races, the fledgling racer must acquire a "C" level license, the first of four licenses in the game. Each license level involves passing a set of racing tests, and better test performances lead to additional rewards.
After acquiring a license, it is time to buy a car with the "cash" rewards earned in passing the tests. GT Racing has 24 different car manufacturers, but beginners probably can't afford to buy a Ferrari at the start of the game.
GT Racing Sports 14 Tracks and many Different Races
While it is possible to tweak the car performance at the start in the available Garage, or even pick up some enhanced car-parts in the After Market store, it's better to dive right in at the Racing Center.
GT Racing features four different race types. The GT Touring Championship involves races using one of the gamer's own cars, while Driver Contracts involve racing with a specific car dictated to the racer. The Constructor Events are for cars by an individual manufacturer, and finally there are Special Invitation races that must be earned. Finishing in the top 3 in any race or series unlocks the next race. Obviously, more money is earned through better finishes.
The 14 tracks in GT Racing include the real world Laguna Seca layout, as well as a host of other track types, including road, urban, and even rally courses. The graphics and frame-rate are top notch for the iPhone, but below the quality of Gran Turismo on the PSP.
The racing interface uses the iPhone's accelerometer for steering with the gas and brake pedals overlaid on the screen. There are various driving aids to assist novice drivers, and the accelerometer settings are thankfully adjustable. It is also possible to race along to music from one's own iTunes library
GT Racing Motor Academy is arguably the best racing game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Its fully-fledged career mode stands alone amongst portable racers and will provide hours of quality gameplay.
