Monty Python Meets Fantasy Gaming on the iPhone
The core of Highborn's solitaire Campaign mode is the war between the hero, Archie and his arch-nemesis, Floyd. The gamer moves his various units on a well-drawn two-dimensional map while alternating turns with the computer player.
When combat occurs, it takes place in a similar manner to Nintendo DS's Advance Wars series, but on a 3D rendered battlefield. Terrain factors and spell-casting also play into the combat resolution, but spells are only possible when attacking. The gamer earns additional spells when capturing various monoliths strewn across the map.
The game's dialogue is well-written and truly hilarious, given the Highborn an almost Monty Python feel at times. The banter between Archie and Floyd is a highlight of the game. The various scenarios in campaign mode also sport a similar sense of humor and witty interplay between good and evil.
Online Multiplayer Gaming and Social Networking Features
Multiplayer play in Highborn only uses Facebook Connect, which is pretty frustrating for people who aren't fans of the ubiquitous social networking service. On the other hand, it allows multiple games to take place simultaneously which is convenient for social gamers.
Highborn also provides support for the iPhone's popular OpenFeint social gaming network, but only with a set of achievements as leaderboards aren't relevant in Highborn. Highborn recently featured as OpenFeint's Free Game of the Day.
Jet Set Games recently released a native iPad version of the game, called Highborn HD. The company is also planning on implementing a long-awaited "undo" feature in an upcoming update for the iPhone version of Highborn.
Highborn is a highly recommended strategy title for iPhone gamers. Its quality writing, graphics and gameplay are sure to provide fans of fantasy gaming with many hours of fun.
