When first starting iDaTank, the user must complete a quick tutorial covering tank control, the weapon system, and upgrades. The various menus in the game feature stylish graphics that match iDaTank's levels.
iDaTank's premise involves traveling to various asteroids while harvesting crystals. These crystals are used to power up portals that allow navigation to the next asteroid. Of course, a collection of enemies are trying to prevent the intrepid cybernetic tank from completing its mission.
Virtual controls are used to move the tank around the 3D-rendered asteroids, while auto-aiming and firing features add convenience to the gameplay. Each asteroid sports hills and valleys which can put the gamer in a bind if trying to climb backwards up a steep hillside as alien enemies approach.
iDaTank's RPG-like Upgrades and Progression
A host of power-ups and weapon upgrades add a nice layer of RPG-like progression to iDaTank. Considering the game's 26 levels as well as the increasing difficulty of the enemies and bosses, the more powerful weapons become quite useful later in the game.
In-game currency is earned by destroying aliens, with the "coin" being primarily used to purchase better equipment, although upgrades are also possible after earning promotion to a new rank. Of particular note are the clones, essentially extra lives which are especially needed when trying to complete a boss level.
iDaTank is the kind of genre-bending game that proves the worth of the independent game development movement. Featuring an excellent physics engine, bright and unique 3D graphics, combined with a RPG layer of character advancement, iDaTank is one of the top games available for the iOS platform.
