Single-serve coffee makers are the hottest small kitchen appliances in the current market. Keurig and Tassimo are known as the top two brands, so what sets them apart?

Coffee is arguably the most popular legal drug on Earth. From the days of Joe DiMaggio's Mr. Coffee and beyond, brewing a quality Cup o' Joe in one's own kitchen has led to a rather large industry of home coffee brewing appliances. Recently, the single-serve coffee marker has come to lead the market for home brewing with their convenient single-serve containers providing a perfect cup of gourmet coffee or even tea or hot chocolate.

Keurig and Tassimo are the two biggest names in the single-service coffee making industry. Both companies are known for making (Bosch manufactures the Tassimo brewers) high-quality appliances that brew a great cup of coffee. So what are the differences between the two? Is one brand better than the other, or do they serve different needs? A comparison of both brands follows.

Keurig B40 Elite Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System

 • MSRP: $99.99
 • Brews: Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Tea (no Latte, etc.)
 • Single-serve K-Cups with many popular brands including Emeril, but no Starbucks

Tassimo Bosch Suprema Hot Beverage System

 • MSRP: $169.99
 • Brews: Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Tea, Latte, Cappuccino, Espresso
 • Easy cleaning water filtration system
 • Single-serve T-Discs with many popular brands including Starbucks
 • Bar-coded smart technology brewing system

The Differences Between the Keurig and Tassimo Brewers

Looking at the top two bullet points for both models reveals the main difference between the Keurig and Tassimo brewers. The Tassimo brewers tend to be more expensive than the Keurig models, although holiday rebates are sometimes available for the Tassimos.

While their models are more expensive, the Tassimo brewers provide more functionality, since they brew lattes, cappuccinos and espressos in addition to the standard coffees, teas and cocoas provided by both machines. Tassimo claims their bar-coded brewing system assures a perfect brew each time, but since the point of all single-serve brewers is the perfect cup of coffee, any advantages provided by the bar-coded brewing method are limited to the ability to brew lattes, espressos, etc.

Both models are relatively easy to clean with dishwasher safe parts.

K-Cups and T-Discs

At the core of both brewing systems is the single-serve container called a K-Cup for the Keurig models, and a T-Disc for the Tassimo models. Both companies offer a whole host of popular coffee brands for their brewers, with Tassimo winning the battle for Starbucks fans as the Seattle brewer's wares are exclusively available on T-Discs. Because of the additional capabilities of the Tassimo models, various lattes, cappuccinos and espressos are available only in T-Disc format.

The K-Cups provide some brand sizzle for Keurig owners, offering the Emeril line of gourmet coffees along with Newman's Own. Hot Chocolate fans also have many K-Cup options, including offerings from Green Mountain. But Keurig owners will have to head out to Starbucks to get a branded latte or espresso.

Pricing between K-Cups and T-Discs are pretty comparable, with 12 and 24 count packages being the most popular. So despite the fact that a Tassimo owner will spend more up front for a brewer, the actual beverage costs work out to be similar in the long run.

Paying More for a Starbucks Latte

Since both the Keurig and Tassimo brew a perfect cup of coffee, the essential difference between the two brewing machines is the extra cost for the ability to brew lattes and espressos. Starbucks fans who want a branded cappuccino should check out the Tassimo models, while coffee fans looking to save a few dollars and aren't interested in frothy coffee drinks will be happiest with a Keurig. Both models are excellent home appliances.

I love Keurig Brewer as well. Makes Great coffee - fast, easy and no mess :). But K-Cups for it not cheap. Actually 40c-50c per cup. Here's website K-Cup Coffee coupons if you interesting.

I love coffee, and am having a hard time deciding. I think that Keurig is winning me over, though.

Had a Tassimo for 2 years now. Got fed up with the lack of variety of the coffee offered and the beverage not staying hot enough. Don't get me wrong, the Tassimo is a great little machine...I just think my tastes are changing. Just bought a Keurig K-Cup Platinum model. Love how quiet it is! Love the coffee variety offered! And love the choice of the 5 different cup sizes...The coffee so far is just as good as the Tassimo. I'm still keeping my Tassimo for the occasional Latte's and Cap's.

I've had a lot of experience with both (keurig at work, tassimo at home) and to me the tassimo is by far the better machine, despite many reviews to the contrary.
The supposed size selection on the keurig I find somewhat deceptive. Since it's not a smart machine like the tassimo, it doesn't add more coffee to your larger mug, it just makes the coffee watered down and gross. Yes, the keurig has more different k-cups than the keurig has t-discs, but lets be honest- how many of those is any one person actually going to sample? I prefer the coffee the tassimo makes. It has a much richer and more complex taste because the tassimo machine does more than just drip the water through the grinds.
Not to mention the keurig can't make a latte or capp at all. Or decent hot chocolate! The keurig hot chocolates are frankly undrinkable. Hot water with a little chocolate in it? Yuck. The milk hot chocolate for the tassimo however is delicious and creamy!
Basically, the keurig is a one trick pony and it doesn't even do that trick as well as the tassimo.

Having had the Keurig B70 (Platinum) for about a year and a half, the one main advantage I saw with it is the ability to brew any coffee you want with the re-usable K-Cup. So if you run out of K-Cups, or you want to brew Star Bucks, Tim Horton's, or etc. that is invaluable.

The downside to the Keurig model (and possibly Tassimo is the same) is that many of these fail after around a year or so (do an online search). My model is just out of warranty and it is dead, with what I believe is a bad pump. Since it is out of warranty, the only real option is a new one. That is around 200 dollars more than I want to spend a year on a coffee making appliance.

I've had a Tassimo for a year and a half with no problems at all using it at least once a day. Basically, if you want variety get a Keurig. If you want better tasting coffee and the ability to make lattes, then get a Tassimo. The Tassimo is designed better and lasts longer based on user comments bolth on blogs and in stores.

Keurigs do seem it break after about a year or so. The newer Tassimo made by Bosch is a better machine. I was unsure which to by and was afairs of something going wrong with the barcode reading. We have both on my fmily and the Tassimo clearly is better lasting then the Keurig. The only problem is that the Tassimo isn't carried in every store like the Keurig. Bosch needs to do a better job getting themselves into more stores. So I just order most of the time online.
