Gameloft's Let's Golf series originally delighted iPhone and iPod Touch owners with a quality game of cartoon-like action on the links, not unlike Hot Shots Golf on the PlayStation platform.
Let's Golf 3, the latest iteration of the game, unfortunately uses a "freemium" model where the title itself is free at the App Store, but even finishing the first 18-holes might require buying Energy Points through an in-app purchase.
Gameloft also ruined GT Racing Motor Academy by switching it to a freemium title while removing the original from the App Store. Both Let's Golf and Let's Golf 2 are currently unavailable on the iOS platform.
Gameloft's Dealing Let's Golf Energy Points on the Street Corner
Upon first starting a game of Let's Golf 3, the user is prompted to create a character and follow a quick tutorial of the game mechanics. The graphics, as usual, are excellent on the iPad 2. The physics aren't as solid, with the slippery fairways and greens feeling more like ice than grass.
The real problems with the game start when the user bogeys a hole (or worse). It's not possible to proceed to the next hole on the course; the user must score at least a par to continue, all the while using up Energy Points.
When Energy Points run out, the game stops until more are purchased. One point is also earned each hour. In-game dollars are used to buy Energy Points, and these virtual dollars can be earned through on-the-course success, like when scoring an Eagle.
It's more likely, however, that earning more energy requires an in-app purchase. 1400 game dollars are available for $49.99, nearly the price of a PS3 game! Frankly, this is an unacceptable game element introduced by Gameloft purely for profit-mongering reasons.
Gameloft Removes the Round from Let's Golf 3
Once 18 holes are finished, it's not even possible to check one's score against par. Gameloft effectively removed the round from Let's Golf 3. The game is essentially a succession of holes waiting to be unlocked.
There's little doubt that Gameloft took the freemium business model too far with Let's Golf 3. Using in-app purchasing to unlock additional courses or improve player attributes is one thing, but having to spend money to actually finish 18-holes is unacceptable. Smart iOS gamers need to stay far way from Let's Golf 3.
