Gameloft's Let's Golf 3 is available for free at the App Store. Unfortunately, finishing a full round of golf in this game may require spending some cash.

Gameloft's Let's Golf series originally delighted iPhone and iPod Touch owners with a quality game of cartoon-like action on the links, not unlike Hot Shots Golf on the PlayStation platform.

Let's Golf 3, the latest iteration of the game, unfortunately uses a "freemium" model where the title itself is free at the App Store, but even finishing the first 18-holes might require buying Energy Points through an in-app purchase.

Gameloft also ruined GT Racing Motor Academy by switching it to a freemium title while removing the original from the App Store. Both Let's Golf and Let's Golf 2 are currently unavailable on the iOS platform.

Gameloft's Dealing Let's Golf Energy Points on the Street Corner

Upon first starting a game of Let's Golf 3, the user is prompted to create a character and follow a quick tutorial of the game mechanics. The graphics, as usual, are excellent on the iPad 2. The physics aren't as solid, with the slippery fairways and greens feeling more like ice than grass.

The real problems with the game start when the user bogeys a hole (or worse). It's not possible to proceed to the next hole on the course; the user must score at least a par to continue, all the while using up Energy Points.

When Energy Points run out, the game stops until more are purchased. One point is also earned each hour. In-game dollars are used to buy Energy Points, and these virtual dollars can be earned through on-the-course success, like when scoring an Eagle.

It's more likely, however, that earning more energy requires an in-app purchase. 1400 game dollars are available for $49.99, nearly the price of a PS3 game! Frankly, this is an unacceptable game element introduced by Gameloft purely for profit-mongering reasons.

Gameloft Removes the Round from Let's Golf 3

Once 18 holes are finished, it's not even possible to check one's score against par. Gameloft effectively removed the round from Let's Golf 3. The game is essentially a succession of holes waiting to be unlocked.

There's little doubt that Gameloft took the freemium business model too far with Let's Golf 3. Using in-app purchasing to unlock additional courses or improve player attributes is one thing, but having to spend money to actually finish 18-holes is unacceptable. Smart iOS gamers need to stay far way from Let's Golf 3.

Energy points regenerate at 1 pt/hour, to a max of 5. Thus you can play the whole game, slowly. Some of the challenges take 9 or 18 points; those you would have to buy for in-game dollars (which you get one per level) or for real-world cash. So, it's merely annoying, not truly broken.

Waiting for energy would not be a problem for me if I would actually get it back. A bug prevents my energy from going up hourly. I heard turning the device off and on fixes the problem but it only works half the time for me. Otherwise I like the game.

The latest update just completely broke the energy model. It used to "work", but now that the game doesn't use the regenerated points before the ones you've earned, I fully agree with Paul, it's broken. It means that without buying more energy, you can never get more than 5 bars. So it's gone from painful, but usable if you're patient, to impossible. Gameloft blew it.

I play this game all the time right now 10/25/2011 and I don't have to spend money for energy. I currently have 200+ energy and I never spend real money to buy it. (Tip of the day: YOU CAN EARN ENERGY!) All you have to do is get good at the game. You can play others online and when you beat them you win the amount of energy they used to join the game you play, plus you get your energy back. Try this: Select Multi-Player > Online > Create Room > Ireland > Select Match (at the bottom) > Select Random 9 H Easy. Wait for a player to join your game that you feel you can beat. Click on the player and kick him out of your match if he looks like you cannot beat him. NOW WIN !!!
